Age: Her age is uncertain in the book, but I would assume around nineteen.
Alignment: Her alignment can be disputed, but from her view she works for good in the name of France. However, to the British she is very deceitful.
Brief Background Summary:
Delphine is a young French woman employed by the French navy. Her grandfather was Mr William Melville of Charlestown, Virginia. He was an American and an alchemist. Despite being a friend of freedom, and utterly opposed to the British Empire, he underwent all the years of training that the Royal College of Alchemists insisted on. He often lied about his own beliefs in order to pass tests and checks which the College set in order to keep the secret of Alchemy among the British. He studied for ten years in England, and afterwards he returned to America to construct the very first aether ship, the Liberty. [Rephrased excerpt from Starcross.]

Her grandfather's wife and daughter were forced to run to France, after William's failed attempts at fighting British warships in space. They managed to receive protection under the Revolutionary Government and Delphine's mother married a Frenchman, later to have Delphine. Delphine's life was fairly easy and there was hardly a money issue among them as they lived off the pension given to them by the French government as a pension in honour of her grandfather's good deeds.

After receiving word that a man named Mr Titfer had schemes on an asteroid of Mars to build a hotel that could fling itself back into time, she understood immediately what that meant. Her smart grandfather had managed to somehow lock the Liberty back in time where something happened to him that he couldn't return from the past.

Delphine proposed her plan to the Government and they sent her along to Starcross to find out what fate had befallen the Liberty. It didn't matter to her if Britain would be defaced in the process of her expedition. She worked completely for France. She disguised herself as an invalid in a wheelchair, but before she could get into her discovery a terrible fate would befall her.
